The rules
- I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.
- Symbols are added from largest to smallest: VIII = 8.
- A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted, only in six pairs: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400), CM (900).
- No symbol repeats more than three times in a row, so 4 is IV, not IIII (clock faces are a traditional exception).

Frequently asked questions
How do you write 2026 in Roman numerals?
MMXXVI: MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6).
Is there a zero in Roman numerals?
No. The Romans had no numeral for zero.
Why does the converter stop at 3,999?
4,000 would need four Ms in a row. Larger numbers used a bar over a numeral to multiply it by 1,000, which isn’t standard in modern use.
